The Chromatographic Society 2025 Martin and Jubilee awards
The Chromatographic Society is pleased to announce the awarding of the 2025 Martin medal to Professor Bogusław Buszewski.
2025 Martin Medal winners
The Martin Medal is named after Professor A.J.P. Martin who, together with Richard Synge, received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1952 for their seminal work on partition chromatography. The award represents the highest honour that The Chromatographic Society confers.
2025 Martin Medal winner Bogusław Buszewski, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland.
Professor Bogusław Buszewski joined the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun in 1994 and became head of the Center for Education & Research in Separation Methods & Bioanalytics in 2010. Professor Buszewski is globally recognized for his work in a number of fields but in particular, the fundamental understanding of absorption kinetics of metals, the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and environmental analysis techniques.
The primary separation tools used by his group are gas chromatography and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. His work has always been highly regarded; he is an author of almost 800 scientific publications (>32000 citations) and 16 books. His Hirsch index (h-index) is 79. He has received numerous awards for his work over the years, recently including the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
Professor Buszewski is a foremost presence at international conferences (HPLC, ISC, ISSS) and has represented Eastern Europe’s chromatographic excellence for many years, as well as serving on chromatographic editorial boards (Journal of Chromatography A and Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis). There is no doubt that Bogusław Buszewski represents the ideal of a world-renowned analytical scientist and is a worthy recipient of the Martin Medal.
2025 Silver Jubilee Medal winners
The Jubilee Medal was created in 1982 to mark the 25th anniversary of The Chromatographic Society, with the intention of recognising up-and-coming separation scientists who have made major use of separation science in their own field or have made important contributions to a particular area of separation science. In 2024 the Silver Jubilee medal has been awarded to Professor Elia Psillakis
2025 Silver Jubilee Medal winner Elia Psillakis, Technical University of Crete, Greece.
Professor Elia Psillakis joined the Technical University of Crete in 2005, becoming a full professor in 2015. Her research is primarily oriented towards sample preparation and extraction techniques, of which she has valorised the vacuum-assisted headspace microextraction technique (Extratech). She has also recently become head of the EuChemS-DAC Sample Preparation Study Group and Network. Professor Psillakis is also a leading light in the field of sustainable analytical methods, introducing the concepts of scoring the ‘greenness’ of sample preparation (AGREEprep) and circular analytical chemistry. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications (10000 citations), and 7 book chapters. Her research is well cited, having an h-index of 52.
Outside of research she is widely involved in teaching and education activities, such as serving on editorial boards (Advances in Sample Preparation, Environmental Analysis for Frontiers in Analytical Science), giving seminars, and speaking at international conferences (for example the HPLC conference series and ISC2024). She is also a Co-Chair of the IUPAC Project: Greenness of official standard sample preparation methods.
Professor Psillakis is the definition of a rising star, and The Chromatographic Society are delighted to name her as the 2025 Silver Jubilee Medal winner.
