Winner: Dr. Fabrice Gritti

Dr Fabrice Gritti of the Department of Chemistry, University of Tennessee has been awarded the 2013 Chromatographic Society Jubilee Medal for his important contribution to the development of chromatographic science.

Dr Grittis’s strong presence in the peer-reviewed scientific literature and prominence as speaker at international separation science meetings was a key aspect in his recognition by The Chromatographic Society. His prolific work fundamentally understanding the adsorption and the mass transfer of analytes at the liquid-solid interface and using this to characterise and design LC stationary phases was recognised by the committee through this award. His recent work on the understanding of mass transfer kinetics on solid-core particles was particularly commended.Dr Gritti obtained his Ph.D at the University of Bordeaux in France in 2001. His doctoral research was titled “Study of Stationary Phases Based upon Liquid Crystal Polymers”.

At Bordeaux he investigated immobilising liquid crystal polymers on silica surfaces as new stationary phases in liquid chromatography and studied the physics of these polymers coated onto planar surfaces. Upon completion of his doctorate, Dr Gritti moved to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville working as Postdoctoral Fellow with Prof. George Guiochon (a winner of the Martin medal in 1980). This was followed by positions at the University as a Research Associate and more recently as a Research Scientist there.
