2025 Summer Studentship student Pavana (Edinburgh Napier University) reflects on the research project
As a student, currently pursuing my masters in pharmaceutical and analytical science, the ChromSoc summer studentship was a pivotal opportunity to bridge the gap between the academic coursework and hands on laboratory research experience. It allowed me to apply the theoretical principles that I am learning real time to a challenging and meaningful project.
I was drawn to this project because it perfectly linked to the core themes of my degree, developing analytical methods for pharmaceutics and focus on therapeutic drug monitoring for anticonvulsants which provided a direct clinical context, showing me how the analytical chemistry directly impacts patient care. Furthermore, the chance to work by using innovative Permeapad® technology, in which the application of green analytical chemistry to reduce the negative environmental impact was a major part.
The invaluable practical experience in operating the LC-MS instrument, developing and optimising a chromatographic gradient method and preparing samples for analysis increase my hands on experience and skills.
The proficiency that I gained in using Permeapad® 96-well plate, significant differentiator on my CV, moving beyond standard extraction to a technique focused on selective permeation. The skills that I have developed have immensely strengthened my profile as I prepare to enter to my new careers. Demonstrated hands on experience with LC-MS is a key requirement for many roles in pharmaceutical industry. My work by using Permeapad® shows I am adept with innovative technologies and making me a forward-thinking candidate. Most importantly this research project proves my capability in problem solving, project management and scientific communication which directly preparing me for the demands of a career in this field.
This studentship provided an invaluable glimpse into the collaborative nature of professional research. The day-to-day guidance and support from Amy Dillon and DR. Giacomo Russo were exceptional, they created a supportive environment, encouraged curiosity and independent thinking. I am deeply grateful to ChromSoc for funding this experience. It has not only developed the concepts but also given me the confidence and a tangible research achievement that I am proud to discuss as I pursue opportunities in the pharmaceutical sectors.
